Join us at GLAZER HALL for a rare opportunity to experience The New York Philharmonic String Quartet perform works by Beethoven, Prokofiev, and Mendelssohn in an intimate concert. The New York Philharmonic String Quartet brings together four principal musicians from one of the world’s most celebrated orchestras. Featuring Concertmaster Frank Huang, Principal Second Violin Qianqian Li, Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps and Principal Cello Carter Brey, the ensemble showcases the artistry, precision and expressive power of these distinguished musicians.

Formed in January 2017 during the Philharmonic’s 175th anniversary season, the quartet made its debut as the solo ensemble in John Adams’s Absolute Jest in New York that March, reprising the work during the orchestra’s European spring tour later that year. Each member is a multiple-prize winner who has appeared as a concerto soloist with The New York Philharmonic and orchestras around the world. They have also performed frequently in the Philharmonic’s chamber music series at David Geffen Hall and Merkin Concert Hall.

The program features three masterworks of the string quartet repertoire: Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 6 in B-flat Major, Op. 18, No. 6; Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 2 in F Major, Op. 92; and, following intermission, Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 44, No. 2. Together, these works span the Classical, Romantic and 20th-century traditions, offering an evening of dynamic contrasts, lyrical beauty and virtuosic ensemble playing.
