Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Focus: History Grades: 4-8
The music of New Orleans comes to life with the Preservation Hall Foundation’s Kids in the Hall Field Trip program. A one-hour, immersive experience offers elementary and middle school students the opportunity to listen to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, followed by a Q&A session with the musicians. This program combines the history of the South and the culture surrounding New Orleans with the origins of jazz.
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band was formed in the early 1960s in New Orleans by tuba player Allan Jaffe. Taking its name from the famed Preservation Hall in the heart of the French Quarter, the ensemble was created to keep the city’s rich jazz traditions alive. Over the decades, the band has become an international ambassador of New Orleans jazz, celebrated for carrying forward the timeless spirit of the music while inspiring new generations of listeners around the world.
The Laura Sachs Family Foundation Arts in Education Series at GLAZER HALL makes the performing arts accessible to all students through a dynamic lineup of one-hour, curriculum-linked field trips. We believe the arts are vital to lifelong learning—sparking curiosity, building critical thinking, and cultivating adaptability. By partnering with local educators, we align our programming with school reading lists and lesson plans to introduce many students to the magic of live theater for the very first time.
