The Balanchine Ballerina
This program celebrates the iconic roles that shaped a revolutionary vision of ballet, illuminating the brilliance, musicality, and individuality of the Balanchine ballerina. From dazzling virtuosity to lyrical nuance, these works reveal the enduring legacy of George Balanchine’s artistry—passed from one generation of dancers to the next.
Founded in 1948 by legendary choreographer George Balanchine and arts patron Lincoln Kirstein, New York City Ballet (NYCB) is one of the world’s foremost dance companies, celebrated for its innovative artistry, technical brilliance and distinctive neoclassical style. The Company quickly established itself as a leading force in modern dance, with choreographer Jerome Robbins joining in 1949 and helping build a diverse repertory of groundbreaking works. Today, NYCB maintains an active repertory of more than 150 ballets, many considered modern masterpieces.
Since moving to Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in 1964, the Company has continued to shape the evolution of ballet through exceptional performances and creative innovation. In 2009, Katherine Brown was named NYCB’s first-ever Executive Director, and in February of 2019, Jonathan Stafford was named Artistic Director of New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet, and Wendy Whelan was named Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet. Widely acknowledged for its enduring contributions to dance, NYCB is committed to promoting creative excellence and nurturing a new generation of dancers and choreographers.
