About

Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Focus: History Grades: 4-8

The music of New Orleans comes to life with the Preservation Hall Foundation’s Kids in the Hall Field Trip program. A one-hour, immersive experience offers elementary and middle school students the opportunity to listen to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band,
followed by a Q&A session with the musicians. This program combines the history of the South and the culture surrounding New Orleans with the origins of jazz.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band was formed in the early 1960s in New Orleans by tuba player Allan Jaffe. Taking its name from the famed Preservation Hall in the heart of the French Quarter, the ensemble was created to keep the city’s rich jazz traditions alive. Over the decades, the band has become an international ambassador of New Orleans jazz, celebrated for carrying forward the timeless spirit of the music while inspiring new generations of listeners around the world.

The LAURA SACHS FAMILY FOUNDATION Arts in Education Series at GLAZER HALL introduces students – regardless of their economic background – to the arts through a full roster of one-hour, curriculum-related shows. We believe the arts are essential to foster a love of lifelong learning by cultivating curiosity, enhancing critical thinking, and promoting adaptability. In collaboration with local educators, our programming aligns with school curricula and reading lists, introducing students, many for the first time, to a diverse range of performing arts experiences.
